Walk of the Roman chapels around Vizille

Along this walk discover three buildings from the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries.

Leave from the Place du Château in Vizille then go up rue Jean Jaurès towards Laffrey. Cross the bridge over the Romanche in the direction of Notre-Dame-de-Mésage.
First, you will discover the 12th century Saint-Firmin chapel. It is classified as a historical monument and it is built of tuff, a rock found near the place of construction. It is installed on a hill and overlooks the Romanche valley.

Continue to the Sainte-Marie church, also listed as a historic monument. It is mentioned since 1110 and is one of the oldest Romanesque buildings in the Vizille basin. It has an original architecture with a unique Carolingian nave and an apse.

Continue on your way towards Saint-Pierre-de-Mésage. In the village, follow the marked trails in the direction of Péage-de-Vizille. Cross the Romanche and return to Vizille by the path called "behind the walls". It follows the surrounding wall of the Domaine de Vizille.

Back in Vizille, join the city center by following the road on your left. Then you can continue your walk by following the "historical circuit" markings which lead you to the priory, located in the cemetery of Vizille. The Roman portal remains of this building. Its tympanum, sculpted in Vizille marble, represents the Last Supper. It is one of the most remarkable in the Dauphiné. Heads and hands were mutilated by Protestants during the Wars of Religion.
