Originally planned as a tribute to the famous events of the “Day of the Roof Tiles,” the fountain of the three orders finally came to celebrate the centenary of the revolution in the Dauphiné and as such, was not inaugurated until 1897 by the French president Félix Faure. The limestone monument is the work of Henri Ding. Four bronze tritons call out a water song from their horns of plenty, proclaiming the budding values of the new Republic: Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood…and Justice. Three figures crown the fountain, representing the nobility, the clergy, and the Third Estate looking together towards the same radiant future.
