The painter Ernest Hébert (1817–1908) often visited his family home in La Tronche. He would spend a few months there, usually at the end of summer—his favorite season in the Dauphiné—or stop there during his trips to Italy when he left Paris. Purchased by his mother in 1821, the property was transformed into a private museum by the painter’s wife, Gabrielle Hébert, in 1934.

Through the works of the artist and those of his contemporaries, the museum traces the career of an academic painter who lived through the 19th century. It presents, in a chronological and thematic exhibition, the work of Ernest Hébert, as well as the paintings and sculptures of his friends and students. It covers his formative years, his time as a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome, and his career in Paris, not to mention his two terms as director of the Villa Medici and his numerous stays in Italy.

The period furniture and display of the painter’s mementos immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the artist’s life. The 17th-century frescoes, uncovered during the renovation of this beautiful Dauphiné residence, evoke the history of the site.

A beautiful two-and-a-half-hectare park surrounds the residence, whose terrace offers a magnificent view of the gardens and the Belledonne mountain range. Designated a “Remarkable Garden,” it consists of an Italian-style garden and an English-style garden where the water in the ponds and fountains gently murmurs. An invitation to stroll amidst the interplay of light and shadow. The estate as a whole is a charming property, one of the few remaining examples of an artists’ home in the region.

In 2012, the Hébert Museum received the “Maison des illustres” designation. This designation is awarded to sites that preserve and convey, with talent and originality, the legacy of the artistic, scientific, and political figures who once lived there.
