In 2026, Arcabas would have been 100 years old! Isère is celebrating this centenary, and the department has been working on it for several years, notably in Chamrousse, at the Maison du Patrimoine et de l'Environnement.
Arcabas used printmaking techniques (lithography, engraving and serigraphy) as a means of expression alongside his painting, first in the 50s, then in the 70s and finally around 1985. This body of work never gave rise to an exhibition as such during his lifetime. These works, which were the subject of an exhaustive inventory in 2025, supplemented by a number of collector's posters from the 60s in lithography, now constitute an unprecedented exhibition-event.
Please note: a painting by Arcabas, donated by the artist, is on display at Chamrousse's Eglise du Saint-Esprit, and can be viewed during guided tours.

For further information
Arcabas (Jean Marie Pirot) was born on December 26, 1926 in Trémery, Moselle. In 1950, he moved to the Dauphiné. The painter's work, widely exhibited in secular and religious public buildings in France and abroad, has won him a large following. It is now well known.
At the end of the 70s, in response to the particular response to his work decorating the church of Saint-Hugues de Chartreuse, an association of friends was created on the initiative of his family and friends.
After the painter's death, the Isère département, which had owned the Saint-Hugues complex since 1984, renamed it the Musée Arcabas.
The association became the Association des amis de l'œuvre d'Arcabas.
The Arcabas centenary is a unique opportunity for the association to fulfill its role, i.e. to shed light on the painter's work and life, to take steps to promote, conserve and restore works in the public domain, and to initiate university-style research into Arcabas's work.
