This stage of La Belle Via crosses the Montfort marsh, where dragonflies, butterflies and orchids cohabit in a bucolic effervescence. The marsh then gives way to breathtaking views of the Belledonne, Chartreuse and Vercors ranges. You cycle into Grenoble, dominated by the Bastille fort and its iconic cable car. Known for hosting the 1968 Winter Olympics and for its flatness, this city is eminently bike-friendly, thanks to its imposing network of cycle paths, and lends itself perfectly to discovery at a moderato tempo.

Step by step

Stay on the right bank of the Isère, on a shared, low-traffic road from Le Touvet to St Ismier. This section has very few hills and is very easy to ride.
Then take the voie verte from St Ismier through Grenoble. There's no difficulty here, as the route is flat and on its own right-of-way. Take advantage of Grenoble's extremely dense cycling network.
