The redevelopment of an urban wasteland in the heart of the city has been a success for the city of Grenoble, as it was awarded the grand prix écoquartier 2009. Its aim is to foreshadow the compact, space- and energy-efficient city of tomorrow.
The project has resulted in the creation of around 1,100 housing units (over 40% of which are social rental) and student residences (around 200), as well as an elementary school, a retirement home (80 beds) and a "espace convivi'âges", a municipal swimming pool, around 50 new stores, a hotel residence in a former barracks building, a 4-star hotel, an art house cinema and 5 hectares of urban parkland.
