The Bastille and Saint-Eynard forts

Equipment : Pedestrian sports, Hiking itinerary

The discovery begins with a splendid view of Grenoble from the Bastille and ends at the Fort du Saint Eynard. This monumental work of art offers an incomparable spectacle of the surrounding mountains.

Step by step

Park in the esplanade parking lot near Grenoble's Porte de France. Start from the summit of the Bastille (accessible by cable car). From the Bastille plateau, follow the GR9. Pass through Mont Jalla and under Mont Rachais and follow the signs for Le Sappey until you reach Col de Vence. Once in Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, the route runs between two houses. 200 m further on, take the quiet road up to Les Pilonnières. At the crossroads with the route du Fort du Saint Eynard, turn left and join the main road (Croix de Saint Bruno). After 200 m, leave the main road to follow a secondary road that runs alongside the ski lifts. Turn left to reach a large parking lot in front of a gîte. From the Col de Vence, turn left for 100 m onto the Route du Sappey. Then right onto the path that climbs steadily up to the Saint Eynard fort. Go around the fort to the left, skirting the ditches until you reach the main entrance. The Fort du Saint Eynard is literally one with the rock. It offers a splendid panoramic view of Grenoble, 1000 metres below.
