The Saint-Eynard fort

Equipment : Pedestrian sports, Hiking itinerary

Overlooking the Grésivaudan, this foothill of Chartreuse pushes the perspective
on Belledonne and even the Mont Blanc. However, you have to be careful here
on the summit ridge near the cliffs, especially with children.

From the parking of the Saint Eynard fort (alt. 1312 m), the beginning of your hike is along the barriers that overhang the cliffs, with the Grésivaudan on your right hand. You follow here the long distance path (GR) n° 9, with white and red markings. At the end of the viewpoint, go around the small part of the cliff by the left, to take again the ridge on the right in direction of the Sappey church. You will go along the top of the cliffs on approximately 2 km. Be careful especially with children. Approximately 1,5 km after your departure, the GR makes a small hook on the left, and moves away from the cliffs to come back very quickly. You arrive thus at the pré du Plat (alt. 1 330 m), where you really begin your descent, always on the GR, in direction of the Sappey church. The path crosses a big track, then takes it on the right the next time. At the next intersection, continue to the right to arrive on the top of a ski slope of Sappey-en-Chartreuse. Then you have to go down this one by wide laces until you reach the accrobranche course, and the sign of the Grand Sommard ski lift (alt. 1 080 m). Go back on your left uphill in the direction of Pillonnières. You leave here the white and red markings of the GR 9, to continue on a yellow marking. After crossing a meadow, the path slopes down and joins the road at La Faurie (alt. 1 003 m). Take the asphalt on the left, always in direction of Pillonnières by the "chemin de Bordelière". You keep your feet on the road until you find on the left the marked path of Pillonnières (alt. 985 m). (Attention: the name of the place is no longer on the sign nor the altitude.) Leave the road by taking on the left to rise in direction of the fort of Saint Eynard. Always follow the yellow markings, turn right at the first fork, and at the upper crossing, continue to climb until you reach the edge of the road
du Fort, in a right hairpin bend. (Warning: error in the marking here. The markings tend to indicate that you should continue straight over the bend and not take the road). Be careful not to go straight on the path, but take the road upstream for about 50 meters, to fork left on the track that goes up. This one brings you back to the crest at the top of the cliffs of Saint-Eynard. You just have to turn right, to come back to your starting point.
